Physicians face a serious challenge in maintaining resiliency. A majority have at least one symptom of burnout but many believe it to be a normal part of being a physician and do not address it causing both the physician's life and patient care to suffer. *

Solutions will require long-term collaborative efforts by all stakeholders but physicians can immediately incorporate short daily practices that provide mental and physical renewal.

Too busy to rest and renew is a mindset giving a false impression of higher productivity. Without intervals of renewal, mistakes increase, productivity declines and wellness suffers.

Sustaining any practice requires tools that are easily mastered, provide high-yield results and take minimal time.

    Prospective longitudinal studies from the Mayo Clinic demonstrate that for every 1-point increase in burnout score, there is a corresponding 43 percent increase in the likelihood a physician will reduce clinical effort in the following 24 months.
